Counselors are actively involved in our students’ middle school experience.

Each counselor works with one grade of students and remains with those students throughout the 3 years of middle school.

Counselors work with students, teachers, administrators and parents to help students succeed in middle school and develop the skills to prepare for high school, college and the workplace.

Through individual counseling, group counseling, classroom presentations consultations with teachers and parent conferences, counselors assist students with the following goals:

  • Academic Success

  • Career Development and Decision-Making

  • Interpersonal Relationship Skills

Middle school is a time of exploration, change and growth for students. Counselors are here to help students and their families during this important stage of development.

Student Service Learning - Baltimore County's New Plan

There has been an addition to Baltimore County's Service Learning Plan. The subject offices have identified Essential Curriculum indicators from each course that are appropriate for extending the curriculum to address real life issues and community needs. For most students following a typical sequence of middle school courses, completing all activities within the course, 60 hours of service-learning will be met as follows:
When students complete middle school, they will have accumulated 60 service learning hours if they have attended school regularly and made-up any missing work related to the service learning curriculum infusion courses.
Students will be able to earn additional service learning hours though student-initiated service in the community, extra curricular activities, and special projects. A good source for discovering places to volunteer in your neighborhood can be found at www.baltimorecountymd.gov , click on Volunteer Today.

Baltimore County High School Programs for our 8th Grade Students

Eighth grade is am important year! This is the time for students to prepare for high school by earning good grades, attending school every day and developing the work habits that will prepare students for the next step in their education. Mrs. Rothberg, counselor, met with 8 th grade classes to discuss high school programs, decision-making skills and school success strategies.

Students are assigned to attend their home high schools (Pikesville High, Woodlawn High, Owings Mills High or Milford Mill Academy), based on the location of their residence. If you need to determine which high school your child is zoned to attend, Baltimore County maintains a boundaries website http://www.bcps.org/apps/boundaries/) and a boundary hotline (410-887-4125. The home high schools are comprehensive high schools which offer broad curriculum choices, preparing students for college or work.

Grade eight students may apply to attend a magnet high school to develop their interests or talents through specialized courses. Students may apply to any Baltimore County magnet school program. However, please consult the magnet school booklet to determine if transportation is available for the magnet program of interest.

Eighth grade students received a High School Magnet Programs booklet which contains a complete description of each magnet program, as well as the High School Magnet Application. In addition, dates are included for countywide magnet fairs and open houses at the magnet high schools and dates for required assessments/auditions. Additional applications are available online at http://www.bcps.org/offices/omp/high/apply.asp

Please make note of these important dates in the magnet school application process:

Application Deadline – Friday, November 30, 2007 (postmarked)

. High School Magnet Decision Letters Mailed from Magnet Office – Early March

All students will register for their home high school, even if they are applying to a magnet school.

Please contact Mrs. Rothberg, , at 410-887-6725 to discuss your child’s progress in grade eight and/or plans for high school.

The fee will also apply to the request for additional copies of records or reports that have already been sent home.
